How To Care For Outdoor Furniture

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Having outdoor patio furniture is something that many of us enjoy and is something that can often be a large monetary investment. Nice outdoor patio furniture sets can easily cost hundreds of dollars, so taking care of your outdoor furniture is very important in protecting your investment.

Knowing how to care for your patio furniture is key to making your patio set last as long as possible and can give you many years of outdoor enjoyment. The most popular patio furniture being sold in today’s retail stores consists of metal construction, often aluminum, with weatherproof fabric cushions. These types of sets will last you many years, but they do require special care and treatment. For starters, you will want to bring your cushions inside on rainy days. The cushions are weatherproof by design, but bringing them in out of the elements whenever possible will lengthen the life of the fabric, help keep the fabric clean, and keep the cushions dry for future use on nice days.

The metal frames also require some care. If the frame is aluminum, you are in luck and will have to do very little to care for the frames as they do not rust; however, if your frames are steel, you will need to carefully monitor for chips in the paint and rust. If you find chips in the paint, you will want to seal those with some fresh paint to avoid rust. If you find rust, you will want to sand that down to fresh steel and paint it to avoid further damage to the frame.

Most patio sets are made to weather winter weather outside; however, to prolong the life of your outdoor furniture, you may want to invest in some outdoor furniture covers. Outdoor furniture covers normally come in vinyl or plastic fabric and are neutral or green in color. They are pre-sized to fit common sized patio furniture and slip over the furniture cushions and frame completely. These covers will protect the furniture from the winds and snows of winter and are a really good investment.

Having a nice outdoor patio set is something that is very common in today’s society. We love to be outside enjoying nature whenever possible, and outdoor furniture makes the outdoors as comfortable as our living rooms. Therefore, caring for our outdoor furniture investments just makes good economic sense. If you follow these steps, you will have your outdoor furniture to enjoy for many seasons to come.
